He is also a County Commissioner for Marquette, and is a Professor at Northern Michigan University.

His practice is concentrated in Municipal Law, Civil Defense Litigation, and Contract Formation/Enforcement. He is also a law professor at Northern Michigan University. Mr. Pickens also serves on the Michigan State Bar Representative Assembly, is the Region Representation for the U.P. on the Michigan Defense Trial Council, and formerly served as the Bar President for the Marquette County Bar Association.
